Change: Expect it, Embrace it, Thrive with it!

“Life belongs to the living, and he who lives must be prepared for changes.” ― Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Goethe, a German poet, novelist, scientist, and philosopher of the 18th century, was no stranger to the complexity of human nature and the power of transformation. His work influenced generations of thinkers, artists, and everyday people seeking to live more fully. His words remind us today that change is not just inevitable—it’s essential.

As a coach, I support people who are in some form of transition—a new job, an unexpected loss, a rekindled dream, a shift in identity. Some of these changes are chosen. Others are thrust upon us. But the common thread in all of them is this: to resist change is to resist life itself.

When you embrace the reality that change is part of the adventure of living, something remarkable happens. You stop fearing it. You stop treating it as a disruption. You begin to see it as an invitation—an opportunity to shape your life with intention, courage, and a growth mindset.

Choice becomes your superpower.

Will you choose to stay in comfort or stretch toward growth? Will you tell yourself a story of fear or one of resilience and learning?

Will you see change as the end of something or the beginning of something new?

The truth is, stagnation isn’t safety—it’s a slow erosion of your spirit. When we don’t change, when we don’t allow ourselves to evolve, we stop fully living. We stay stuck in yesterday’s version of ourselves, even as the world moves forward around us.

And yet, change doesn’t always have to be dramatic. Sometimes it’s found in small, quiet choices: saying yes to a new connection, creating a new habit, choosing kindness when frustration rises, or simply being willing to see your story through a different lens.

There’s excitement in that. There’s energy and possibility. Change means you are alive, awake, and engaged in writing your story—one filled with chapters of curiosity, challenge, and becoming.

One of the most grounding resources I often recommend is William Bridges’ classic book, Transitions: Making Sense of Life’s Changes. Bridges was a pioneer in the field of change management, and his work was groundbreaking in that he distinguished between change (external events) and transition (the internal process we go through to adapt).

His model gives language and structure to what can often feel like emotional chaos. It’s helped countless people understand where they are in the journey of letting go, navigating the in-between, and stepping into a new beginning.

That shift in mindset—what we call a growth mindset—changes everything. Instead of resisting change, you start relating to it as part of your adventure. You begin to see your life as a story still unfolding, and you hold the pen.

Even in uncertainty and chaos, you can choose your attitude.

Even in loss, you can choose to look for meaning.

Even in fear, you can choose to move forward anyway.

So I’ll leave you with this challenge:

Start each day with an attitude of growth and opportunity.

Before the world rushes in, ask yourself:

  • What can I learn today?

  • Where is life inviting me to grow?

  • How can I show up fully—right here, right now?

Also, I’ll leave you with this reflective question to sit with:

What change in my life right now might actually be calling me to live more fully—not less?

Your story is still being written. Let it be one of courage, curiosity, and conscious change. You are not behind. You are becoming.

And if you are truly living—you are changing.

Linda
