JUNE'S THEME: The Power of Communication
The secret of a good team can be found in one word: COMMUNICATION.
I can do things you cannot, you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things. – Mother Teresa
Have you ever caught yourself thinking (or even saying aloud) - “It’s easier to just do this by myself.” I have said it even as I’m laughing at myself because I know it’s not the truth!
Yes, it’s easier but the result would never reach my dreams and goals because … face it … I just don’t have all of the skills needed. I need a village. I need a team. I have been so fortunate to collaborate with so many professionals whose talents fill my gaps of ability and who are willing to work with me toward our mutually beneficial goals.
In my work as a coach, though, I hear stories filled with anxiety and stress over work issues that require teamwork.
So what’s the secret of a good team? COMMUNICATION!
…about our personal needs and values;
…about our professional needs and values;
…about our abilities;
…about our inabilities;
…so that every team member is seen, valued and heard;
…about how we will “be” with each other;
…about boundaries, perspectives and purpose;
…about how we set goals and celebrate reaching those goals;
…for learning that takes place because of differences in perspective and in times of conflict;
…on how we will know we have succeeded and how we will celebrate;
…on how to offer support in times of challenge;
…on how to maintain our mental and physical well-being;
…on what it means to be human.
Communication leads to trust, a clarity of expectations, a place of curiosity without judgment, a place of realistic optimism, a growth mindset.
Communication leads to success because there is an understanding of your “why.”
Does communication take more time? Yes. Is it quicker to do it by yourself? Yes.
Is it worth the tradeoff? No. The tradeoff for completing a task by yourself for which you do not have the essential skills is the risk (probability?) of failure. The risk of not doing great things.
According to The International Coaching Federation,
Team coaching is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the coaching profession. In today’s complex workplace, organizations increasingly recognize the power of teams to innovate and drive their business or mission forward. Team coaching is critical to harness teams’ collective expertise, energy and experience to accelerate performance and improve results.

PS: You may have noticed that I didn’t share a May newsletter. It’s been a fabulously intense time but I’m happy to announce that, in addition to my private practice, I am now also serving as a Mental Health Coach with Lyra.
